Utilizing Permission Norms in BDI Practical Normative Reasoning
نویسندگان
چکیده
Norms have been used in multiagent systems as a standard description of agents’ behaviors. Much effort has been put in formalizing norms and utilizing them in agent decision making with such work often focusing on two types of norms: prohibitions and obligations. However, agents may have incomplete knowledge about norms in a system for several reasons, such as, deficient norms identification techniques or because norms are not fixed and they may change and emerge. In this work we argue that, by assuming that agents do not have complete knowledge of the norms within a system, permission norms are fundamental for modeling unknown normative states. Using Event Calculus, we propose a formal representation of permission norm and show how to use it in agent normative practical reasoning. A simple mineral mining scenario has been used to demonstrate our work, which was implemented in a popular agent programming language.

BDI reasoning with normative considerations
Systems of autonomous and self-interested agents interacting to achieve individual and collective goals may exhibit undesirable or unexpected behaviour if left unconstrained. Norms have been widely proposed as a means of defining and enforcing societal constraints by using the deontic concepts of obligations, permissions and prohibitions to describe what must, may and should not be done, respec...
متن کاملNorm-based behaviour modification in BDI agents
While there has been much work on developing frameworks and models of norms and normative systems, consideration of the impact of norms on the practical reasoning of agents has attracted less attention. The problem is that traditional agent architectures and their associated languages provide no mechanism to adapt an agent at runtime to norms constraining their behaviour. This is important beca...
متن کاملNorm-governed practical reasoning agents
This thesis describes a model of norm-governed practical reasoning agents and demonstrates the implementation of this model in the form of the NoA Normative Agent language and architecture. The introduction of normative concepts such as obligations, permissions and prohibitions into the practical reasoning of an agent is motivated by the need for effective coordination mechanisms in open system...
متن کاملNorm Consistency in Practical Reasoning Agents
Agents based on reactive planning architectures use pre-specified plans as behaviour specifications. Typically, such agents are motivated by desires to achieve or maintain states of the world. In this paper, however, we discuss a reactive planning agent architecture – NoA – where the behaviour of an agent is motivated and governed by norms. Normative agents are motivated by obligations to act, ...
متن کاملNorm Regulation in Collaborative Virtual Environments by Normative Multi-agent Systems
Different types of research have been done on multi-agent systems regarding normative systems. This research addresses the enforcement of norms by a multi-agent system. More specifically this thesis investigates the question whether or not it is possible for a normative multi-agent system to regulate the norms in a collaborative virtual environment. The collaborative virtual environment used in...
